Description
Iron Ore Abstract #2 derives from the Sloss blast furnaces in Birmingham, Alabama. The different colored strips of metal were used by the workers who needed to know when the molten, liquid iron ore was hot enough to be tapped. Sloss Furnaces operated for 100 years; they closed in 1971 because of technological obsolescence. The site was saved by local preservationists and is now a National Historic Landmark, an interpretive museum, and the location for metal arts classes and other activities.
The colors and textures in this piece have been digitally enhanced.
