Description
The chuckwalla is a large lizard whose main defense is to scramble into a crevice and inflate its lungs, thus expanding its body to the point that it is too tightly wedged in for the predator to extract it. This is a female chuckwalla, Sauromalus ater, in the Sonoran desert in southern Arizona. In warmer weather, these reptiles spend their days sunning themselves in rocky areas. You can see how well suited its coloring is for camouflage in its preferred environment.
