Description
Witnessing the annual spring migration (which actually happens in late winter here) of snow geese (Chen caerulescens) is truly experiencing controlled chaos. At the peak of the migrating season, Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge (previously Squaw Creek NWF) in NW Missouri may welcome as many as 300,000 of these birds. Being there at this time of year is amazing - the calls of the geese fill the air, new comers sweep in and then hover just over the packed birds in the water until they find a place to land, and every so often a hawk or an eagle disturbs them and they rise up en masse. I took this photo in mid February, before the peak numbers that year.
