Description
Looking upward toward the dome of the Missouri state capitol building in Jefferson City gives us this beautiful view. The image title, Enlightened in Proportion, comes from the bit of lettering that can be seen at the top of the opening. It is part of a quotation from George Washington's 1796 Farewell Address; the complete sentence actually reads "In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened," but with no punctuation, the end wraps into the beginning. I liked the way these three words seemed to refer as much to the beautiful architecture and elaborate decor of the building's interior as to an inspirational sentiment. The murals that can be seen just below the quote were done by Frank Brangwyn.
