Description
A solitary great blue heron (Ardea herodias) waits quietly in the wetlands of the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge (formerly Squaw Creek NWR) in northwestern Missouri. These large wading birds primarily eat fish and prefer to feed in shallow water as here. I took this photo in mid March, before the new growth of reeds and other water plants and during the breeding season as evidenced by the fact that the heron's bill is orange rather than dull yellow and the legs are rusty brown or orange rather than gray. I used a very light texture and painted effect on this photo, best appreciated by using the full resolution preview on the image.
