Description
A cluster of monarchs (Danaus plexippus) clings to the leaves of a tree in a small woods in a staging area - a place where a wildlife species rests during migration. It takes four generations for the monarch butterfly to complete its annual cycle of migration north in spring and south in winter. The insects in this photograph, taken in western Iowa in mid September, are part of the 4th and longest lived generation.
