Description
A trio of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) sips nectar from wild goldenrod (Solidago) in a "staging" or resting area during their migration south in the fall. Both the butterfly and the wildflower are native to North America. I took this photograph in western Iowa on a mid September day. A strong south wind was blowing and the insects had taken shelter on the north side of a dense clump of trees growing beside a small pond. The fields just beyond the woods were filled with blooming goldenrod, asters, and other wildflowers which made the area perfect for the stop.
