Description
The greater prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido) is actually a pinnated grouse; here you have a full body portrait in profile. Once common in the Midwest and in central Canada, this bird has become increasingly rare. It is now found only on managed prairie land. It does not migrate and in the winter they actually dive into deep show to keep warm. The bird is also known for its showy mating ritual which takes place in late March, throughout the month of April, and into the early weeks of May. The males thump on the ground, inflate bright orange neck sacks, hurl themselves at one another, and jump into the air in their attempts to impress the hens. I photographed this bird in southeastern Nebraska.
