Description
These are the dainty florets of the wildflower called a wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia) because of "wings" on the central stem (not visible here). The flowerheads have three distinguishing characteristics. The yellow petals spread downward and outward; they remind me of the skirt of a twirling ballerina :) The centers are dome-shaped and green. The disk florets are greenish yellow and tubular; they extend from the corolla.
