Description
The grace of the curve of the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis, Missouri, cannot be denied - nor can its amazing engineering. Designed by architect Eero Saarinen, the arch is what’s called a “weighted catenary” by mathematicians. It is has carbon steel walls covered with a stainless steel skin; the lower portion has a concrete in-filling. Saarinen entered the idea in a competition - which he won - in 1947, but it wasn't constructed until the mid sixties (1963-65). The idea behind the competition was to create a memorial to all those involved in the westward expansion of the United States.
