Displayed in rows in a box, macarons, a meringue-based sweet, create a colorful design that stands out against a black background. The pattern is interrupted by a single empty space; one has gone missing. These cookies, now considered a French confection, originated in Italy in the 8th century; but they were not sandwiched together with fillings until the 1830's. The ingredients for the cookie itself are simple: sugar, egg whites, almond powder, and coloring; but these treats are apparently not easy to make.
