Description
In the Appalachians, the bloom of the mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is a sure sign of spring. This broad-leafed evergreen shrub is native to the eastern United States. The state flower of Pennsylvania and Connecticut, its name (Laurel) was also given to a Kentucky county and a city in Mississippi. As you see here, the round flowers grow in clusters; they range in color from light pink to white. I took this photo in May in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee.
