"Niwaki" is the Japanese word both for shaped trees such as this one and for the art of sculpting trees to achieve the look. Here a gardener at the Chicago Botanic Garden is literally up a tree and hard at work maintaining its graceful, open forms. A ladder lies on the ground beneath the tree and beyond it we see the lake and far shore of the Japanese section of the gardens.
