Description
As their name suggests, water iria (Iris versicolor), also known as blue flag iris, are aquatic or water loving plants that are particularly well adapted to growing on the edges of ponds or boggy areas. In the spring or early summer, they have pretty flowers with blue striped petals. These plants remove nitrates and phosphates from the water and are therefore excellent for helping keep a pond clean. It was mid June when I photographed these at the edge of a pond in a city park in eastern Nebraska. These plants were in the water rather than on the bank; from what I read, they will do fine in deeper water IF they have a lot of sunshine – which these did.
