This view of Mater Admirabilis, the iconic statue of the Virgin Mary, inspired by a fresco originally painted by Pauline Perdrau in Rome in the early 1800's, resides at the end of a second floor corridor at Duchesne Academy in Omaha, Nebraska. Set into an alcove and surrounded by symbols both actual and painted, the statue serves as a daily reminder to the students.
The lily on Mary's right symbolizes her purity and quest for God. The distaff (on her left) and spindle (in her hands) represent work and diligence. The basket and Scriptures (in front) speak to Her love of labor and God’s Word. The stars painted on the back wall of the alcove relate to the Revelations 12:1 image of Mary. And the basket in front of her is for the petitions of the students who pass by daily.
