Description
A woman's work is never done . . . or so the saying goes. And that has obviously been true for centuries, perhaps since the beginning of time. In this photo, captured during a living history weekend at Fort Atkinson in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, child watches her mother sweep the board walk porch outside the rifle mess. She is using an old-fashioned broom, probably made of sorghum or "broom corn" bound to a stick. Their costumes are typical of the 1820's, the period when the fort was active. Some of the officers assigned to the fort were married and had children, so it's not difficult to imagine that this scene might have been part of a typical day..
