Description
These delicate, lacy leaves are what remains of a maple leaf after an infestation of Japanese beetles (Popilia japonica). These voracious insects eat only the soft tender part of the leaf, leaving the rib, veins, and petiole. What's left is what you see here - leaf lace that allows the light to pass through the openings and recreate the pattern on any surface the leaves happen to be lying on.
