Description
In this black and white version of "After the Flood", I chose to use digital painting techniques to simplify and emphasize the design elements of the scene.
This beautiful national wildlife refuge lies on either side of the Missouri River in two states; here you are looking across from Nebraska into Iowa. The river itself once flowed in a big, horseshoe-shaped bend at this point. In 1960, the Corps of Civil Engineers re-channeled the river, making a cut across the narrow open end of the bend. The loop became a lake which bears the name of the park - DeSoto. In 2010 and again (and especially) in 2011, the Missouri River flooded and this entire area was underwater for an extended period. This caused the trees at the water's edge to die, leaving only the trunks and bare branches.
