Description
This bridge over the Missouri River between Bellevue, Nebraska, and rural Iowa south of Council Bluffs is the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Memorial Bridge and continues both states’ highway 370’s. The toll bridge is privately owned and for motorized vehicles only. It's design is what is known in engineering as a continuous or through Warren truss bridge. It uses equilateral triangular spaces, inverted alternately, to distribute loads along its length. The strength of the structure lies in the fact that while it's subject to tension or compression, it is not to bending or torsion. This particular bridge has additional, vertical members within the triangles for stabilization. I took this photo on a beautiful summer day, from the bank and looking up river from Haworth Park on the west (Nebraska) side. I also have a color version in my Omaha collection.
