Description
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Memorial Bridge over the Missouri River connects Nebraska and Iowa. A continuation of both states’ highway 370’s, the privately owned toll bridge is for motorized vehicles only. In engineering it is what is known as a continuous or through Warren truss bridge. This design uses equilateral triangular spaces, alternately inverted, to spread out the loads along its length. This creates a structure the strength of which is that it is subject to tension or compression but not to bending or torsion. This particular bridge also has vertical members, used to stabilize the horizontal members, within the triangles. I took this photo on a beautiful summer day, from the bank and looking up river from Haworth Park in Bellevue, Nebraska.
I have a black and white version of this image, also in my Omaha collection.
