Description
A red-winged blackbird (agelaius phoeniceus) perched on top of a sunflower (Helianthus annuus) bloom, stops eating seeds from its center to look around. The female of this bird is blackish brown; the male has bright red shoulder bars that show when it is flying or spreading its wings; the wings have a yellow tip that shows then the bird is at rest. I always thought sunflowers followed the sun, but these were facing east and away from the setting sun. In my research, I found out that they only follow the sun when they are mature; once the blowers are in full bloom, they usually face east. I took this photo in a sunflower field in eastern Nebraska in mid July.
