Description
A bold brown pelican, Pelecanus occidentalis, stands proudly on a post near the marina in Punta Gorda, Florida. The faint masts of sailboats, an American flag flying from the deck of one, can be seen in the background. Although a large bird, this is the smallest species of pelican. It is found on the coasts of both the southern and western United Sates. It feeds on fish; this one is conditioned to people and probably gets more of its food from handouts and scraps it finds lying around on the pier than from fish it dives for.
