Description
Burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) are fairly common in the central United States though, as is the case with so many creatures, their numbers are declining mostly due to loss of habitat. They prefer open flatlands - plains, fields, airfields, grassland - since they live on the ground and, as their name indicates, shelter and nest in burrows; this one uses the abandoned culvert behind it. This is an adult bird as evidenced by its brown and white speckled head and wings. It has its chest turned away from us, but there the markings are more striped.
