Description
This pretty little bird is a cactus wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus) and has been the state bird of Arizona since 1931. As the name suggests, it nests in cactus and the spines protect the bird and its nests from predators. Here it is perched on a cholla (Cylindropuntia fulgida), also known as a jumping or hanging chain cholla. The bird's habitat is limited to the desert Southwest and Mexico; I found it interesting that it was not included in Audobon's Birds of America because he didn't even know about it. I gave the background in this photo a light, painterly look.
