I found this cheery little bird, a cedar waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum), feeding on the small fruits still clinging to a crabapple tree in late February. Around here, that's a sure sign that spring is on the way. These birds winter in Central America and the southern states but breed well into Canada. Seldom seen alone, this one was part of a small flock that had stopped for sustenance in eastern Nebraska on its way north.
