Description
The chickens roam free at the Homeplace, a living history farm typical of the 1850's in the Land Between the Lakes Recreational area in western Tennessee. The structure behind these black and white hens is called a single pen house, a one-room home built by the first generation farmers to live in while they established the rest of the farm. The birds are Plymouth Barred Rock hens. According to a friend who had them on his farm when he was growing up, they are good egg layers and their droppings make great fertilizer for the garden.
