Description
These cholla buds, captured in the early spring, will open into beautiful flowers, surprising by the contrast with the spiny branches they sprout from. This specimen is either a staghorn (Opuntia versicolor) or buckhorn cholla (Opuntia acanthocarpa). The two can really only be distinguished by their fruit and, indeed, often form hybrids with one another. I took this image in Gates Pass west of Tucson, AZ.
