Description
A friend suggested the title "Cliffhanger" for this natural abstract, created from a photo taken from the Bristlecone Loop Trail in Bryce Canyon National Park. This trail is at Rainbow Point, the highest point of the park. The geology of the park is endlessly fascinating and a study in geology. Here you see what are called walls and narrows or, more properly, fins and slot canyons. These formations are formed by erosion, primarily what is called frost wedging caused by freeze/thaw cycles, but rain also plays a part. The prominent white stone in the lower left corner is a capstone, composed of harder rock than than beneath it. Eventually, the weathering process will result in one of the hoodoos, tall, thin spires of rock for which the park is famous.
