Description
A trio of trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) that has just touched down settles in and appears to be having quite a conversation. This could well be a family since young swans (sub adults have the same white plumage as older adults) often stay with their parents for 3-5 years. If that's the case, I'm sure it's dad on the right (the cob) who has a few words for the teenager in the middle while mom (the pen) backs off a bit. The group of four bystanders appears to be quite entertained by the exchange.
I took this photo in late February at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Missouri when these beautiful birds were migrating through on their way north.
