Description
The double-crested cormorant, Phalacrocorax auritus, is the most common North American member of the Phalacrocoracidae family of aquatic birds. A long, hooked beak, which can be seen if you look closely at this silhouette, is characteristic. This diving bird also has relatively short wings, an adaptation that makes it a more efficient diver, but also means it is less efficient at flying. Cormorants, also called shags, are colonial, but this one was alone when I saw it perched on a light post on a Lake Michigan pier.
