Description
The pier that leads out to the light at South Haven, Michigan, is lined with these pretty, curved light posts. I was walking out at sunset one evening when a double-crested cormorant, Phalacrocorax auritus, decided to light on one of them. I managed a few shots before it took off, and then I was delighted to see it simply fly to the next lamp and settle down again. I quickly adjusted my camera settings a bit and moved forward for a few more captures. This time I was ready when it spread its wings and took off. This diving, aquatic bird is quite common in North America. The structure of its feathers decreases buoyancy which helps as it chases fish under water . . . but also means that the plumage does not repel water. Like anhingas, cormorants can often be seen perched with outspread wings, drying them after a dive.
