Description
As you can see, the desert cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii) is perfectly camouflaged with among the rocks of its main habitat, the dry, near-desert grasslands of the American Southwest. This greyish-brown rabbit has a white belly and its tail has a large, rounded white edge which flashes when it takes flight and gives it its name. These animals are mostly nocturnal though they come out in the very early morning and late evening. They have many predators and are pretty defenseless, so though the females have many large litters in a year, few of the babies survive to adulthood.
