This green heron had just caught and swallowed a fish for dinner and was eying a bullfrog for dessert. The frog, as green as the thick algae that surrounded it, had thought it was well camouflaged; but not much escapes the sharp eye of this little predator.
The bird, Butorides virescens, is a relatively small heron, and the pose you see here - with the head and neck pulled in against the body - is not unusual. Green herons are pretty common and have a wide range in North America. But they prefer to remain at the edges of bodies of fresh water, often hidden in the vegetation, and with their greenish black, grey-green, and brown coloring, they aren’t easy to spot.
I was lucky to see this one at Heron Haven, an unexpected wetlands refuge in Omaha, Nebraska, late in the afternoon on a summer day.
I use my camera to explore the world around me and as a basis for creative expression. Because I live in Nebraska, I have a fondness for rural scenes that will be evident as you explore my images, but I enjoy traveling and have many other interests as well. I hope you enjoy your visit.
