Description
You can find the tiny downy blue violet (Viola sororia) growing all over at this time of year, usually in a moist, shady area. They have a number of other common names including the common blue violet, the wood violet, and the lesbian violet or flower. The state flower of four states (Illinois, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Wisconsin), I actually found this one at Fort Atkinson in northeastern Nebraska, on a bluff above the Missouri river. Both the leaves and the flowers are edible.
