When winter seems to drag on and I'm dreaming of spring, nothing gladdens my heart quite like the sight of the first robin. This cheerful songbird often shows up alarmingly early, weeks before the last snowfall of the season. But somehow it manages to find what it needs to survive, often berries or tiny crab apples like these that still cling to the trees. I took this picture much later than that, of course, and the trees had already begin to leaf out and blossom.
The American robin, Turdus migratorius, is migratory. It is very common throughout most of the United States.
I used digital painting effects to give this photo a soft, dreamy look and feel.
