Description
A trio of chimneys and ventilator shafts adorned with broken glass mosaic stands guard in the rooftop sculpture garden of Casa Mila in Barcelona, Spain. Also known as "espanta bruixes" or witch scarers, these functionally necessary structures are also aesthetically pleasing - which was the plan of their creator, Antoni Gaudi. According to tradition in northern and eastern Catalonia, where Gaudi was from, curved tiles (espanta bruixes) are placed in the roof ridge to snag and tear the skirts of the witches as they leave on Sabbath night.
