Description
This old giant saguaro, Carnegiea gigantean, in the southern Arizona desert absolutely dwarfed my husband when he stood next to it - his head came to about where the first arms grow out of the trunk. These cacti do not always develop arms, but when they do, it's not until they are more than 50 years old, so I think this one must be very old indeed. Around its base other cacti are growing - a cholla and a prickly pear for sure. Those plants are more widespread than the saguaro which is native to the Sonoran Desert and pretty much restricted to southern Arizona, Imperial County and the Whipple Mountains in southern California, and Sonora in northern Mexico.
