Description
Yes, the greater prairie chicken (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) can fly as this photo of one caught in flight shows. This stocky grouse, increasingly rare as its habitat decreases, can travel up to 30 miles (though I was unable to determine whether this distance would be covered completely in the air or the bird would periodically land), though they typically spend their lives within the boundaries of a few hundred acres. The bird is best known for its showy, approximately six-week to two month long courtship in the spring when the males challenge one another, fighting for territory on the “lek”, a raised, open area with short grass where they can easily show off for the hens. I took this photo in southeastern Nebraska.
