Description
This hall tree, standing in a wood paneled entrance way next to a mirror, is as decorative as it is practical. Tonight it holds a dozen or more cowboy hats in various natural tones - dark brown, tan, beige, gray, rust, chocolate, umber, black - hung there for the evening as their owners enjoy dinner, conversation, and perhaps a drink or two. Although it was actually the bowler that was most popular in the "Old West", the cowboy style seen here, which came into use in the mid 1860's after the Civil War, is what most of us associate with the term. John Stetson first manufactured the flat-brimmed, high-crowned, durable, waterproof hats, and his name has become synonymous with the style. Though the hat brims were flat and the crowns high, the wearers often softened them in hot steam so they could be re-shaped and personalized. The term "ten-gallon" is also sometimes associated with these hats; no one is quite sure where that came from, but probably from a misunderstanding of a Spanish word.
