Description
More than three dozen painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) lie on a log in the sun. Turtles are cold-blooded and rely on warmth from the environment so they bask for hours on warm days. This semi-aquatic turtle is native to the North America and is widespread; four states (Vermont, Michigan, Illinois, and Colorado) have selected it as their official reptile. I took this photo at the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge (formerly the Squaw Creed NWR) in northwestern Missouri on an incredibly warm mid-February day.
