Description
A crude wood ladder leans against the adobe wall of one of the rooms in Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. Also called Pueblo de Taos, this little Native American town is one of the oldest communities in the United States. The dwellings are made of adobe, building blocks or bricks made of mud and straw and then plastered on both the interior and exterior surfaces. The plaster used here is adobe mud. Adobe is a very practical building material: it doesn't cost that much; it has excellent thermal properties; it lasts well in dry climates; and it's relatively fire proof.
