Description
This woman assumed the role of a laundress on living history weekends at Fort Atkinson, Nebraska. Though the fort was a military installation, in the 1820's when it was active, washerwomen or laundresses were paid by the United States government for their work. Hanging on the clothesline behind her are linens drying in the summer sun and breeze.
