The Iowa State Law Library is located in the capitol building in Des Moines, Iowa, built between 1871 and 1886. Here you are looking at about half the length of the space and you see about half the depth of the generous alcoves. Ornate iron spiral staircases at either end allow access to the balconies. I had seen photos of the stairs and other parts of the library, but nothing quite prepared me for the moment when I entered for the first time. The space is simply breathtaking.
