On a welcome and unseasonably warm day in early February, this female mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) enjoyed swimming about with her mate and other friends in an area of open water at Heron Haven Nature Center in Omaha, Nebraska. The refuge is a spring-fed wetlands sanctuary enjoyed by wildlife and city residents alike. To help orient you in this photo, the hen is very near the steep, concave bank of a small island in this lake, the bank itself in deep shadow. The island is a favorite gathering and nesting place for ducks, geese, and other water fowl. A covered blind on the shore allows visitors to observe and photograph the birds without disturbing them.

I use my camera to explore the world around me and as a basis for creative expression. Because I live in Nebraska, I have a fondness for rural scenes that will be evident as you explore my images, but I enjoy traveling and have many other interests as well. I hope you enjoy your visit.
