Description
This piece began life as a single photograph of a faceless, female mannequin wearing a lace cocktail dress with a short, flared skirt and a spaghetti strap top which I edited and toned blue. I liked the photo well enough to try out different colors. When I couldn't decide among them, I first put three together into a triptych and then doubled that to have a square block of six - a hexaptych as it were. For the title, I decided to go with the more common "polyptych" which simply means many parts (or folds).
From the Greek, the word originally referred to a painting divided into parts; you still see such art in cathedrals and some churches. Historically, the subjects in the different sections were different but thematically related or were an extension of a single, main subject. The sectioned presentation style was also popular with ukiyo-e woodcut printmakers. In the late 1950's and 1960's, the famous pop artist Andy Warhol popularized composites in which the subjects were identical except for their color and others followed suit. My own creation owes its existence to all these traditions and more.
