Description
This cute critter is a yellow-bellied marmot (Marmot flaviventris), native to the higher elevation areas of the mountains in the western United States and southwestern Canada. I photographed it in the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado in early August. Because these creatures live at such high altitudes, they have to hibernate for well over half the year. You can most often see them eating and sunning themselves in the early morning or late afternoon hours; they hide in their burrows for the rest of the day. Social animals, they live in colonies; and when they do come out during the day, one of them stands sentry so that the others can enjoy the sunshine - and fatten up for the long winter.
