Description
A pair of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) prepare for nesting in a low, marshy section of the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge (formerly known as Squaw Creek NFR) in northwestern Missouri. These geese prefer to nest on higher land but very near water, so the structure, a muskrat mound, is perfect for their needs. Muskrat mounds are made of vegetation from the cattails and river bulrush and mud. Other geese float serenely nearby. This bird is native to North America. It is a very large waterfowl. Its plumage is dark brown, white, and black, and its white chinstrap is very distinctive.
