Calico comes in a wide variety of patterns, designs, and colors. This abstract features over a dozen bolts of orange material, standing upright. This versatile textile is sturdy and practical. It is often used for items that will be used and laundered frequently and need to be durable. In pioneer times, it was favored for clothing; today in the United States it is particularly popular with quilters.
I'd always assumed a bolt in a fabric store was a rectangular piece of cardboard around which dry goods were wrapped for storage. In fact, the bolt is the piece of cloth - and can even refer to wallpaper or wood - and the term refers to a commercial unit of measurement used as an industry standard, regardless of how the product is stored.
