Description

This unusual flower is a green and purple amaryllis (Hippeastrum papilio). The white or light green petals are striped with dark red, maroon, or purple. Because the second part of the Latin name means butterfly, the plant is commonly called a butterfly amaryllis. Originally from Brazil where its rain forest habitat is shrinking rapidly, this tropical plant is endangered; however, its popularity in horticultural circles will save it from becoming extinct.
