Description
Adult painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) range in length from five to ten inches; the female is larger than the male. There are four subspecies of which these are the western variety. They can be distinguished by the red pattern on the bottom shell. They prefer slow-moving fresh water; these were in a small creek or low-lying pond at the edge of a wetlands area in the Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. These reptiles eat aquatic vegetation and small water creatures. They hibernate in the winter; these had come out to sun themselves on a log during an unseasonably warm spell in late February.
